Big Wave Camp Vision-Mission

BigWaveCamp: We will become the beacon of conscience and excellence among children and youth summer camps, by boldly addressing the gap between children and nature, imagination and play, quality and affordability.

At the BigWaveCamp we feel that the experiences our campers take with them is just as important as what they leave behind, and that is why we believe that playing in a healthy environment should include the preservation of it.

We believe in the quality that grows from mentorship, the kind of mentorship that stems from an educated and comprehensive adult we call our counselors; counselors who take to heart the responsibility of guiding and teaching children and youth through their example.

We believe in elevating children and youth to recognize the impact of their choices and behaviour towards each other, their environment, and their community, by providing a camp full of variety, tools, and materials, in tandem with the liberty to use and explore them, along with the guidance to safely do so.

We believe that fun does not require batteries or an electrical outlet; it does not require a digital device or expensive equipment or apparatus. It is in the freedom to be yourself, which comes from belonging and being included. We know that good fun equals good memories, and that is priceless.

We recognize that being a parent or guardian today is demanding in schedule and expense; that is why we provide a fair and affordable camp that families can trust with no hidden expenses or additional costs. We treat families with the same courtesy, consideration, and respect that we would expect our families to receive.

Earth ConservationEarth Conservation

Big Wave Camp offers a different kind of education: one of awareness, feeling, and connectivity. We learn to respect the earth and all life, enhancing our own and protecting our future.

Working with the conservation park
Big Wave Camp runs in Ontario's oldest conservation park--a 446-hectare area of forest, waterways, clean air, trails, and open space. We follow the park's strict guidelines and therefore are given special permission to be in its premises. Camp staff undergo training by conservation personnel. All of Big Wave Camp's activities ensure minimal environmental impact and leave the park ecosystem intact.

Taking action with other organizations
We take action through donations to various international environmental organizations, such as Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, 350.org, Avaaz, and Blue Voice. We also educate and spread awareness about these groups, support their campaigns, and attend their events. A portion of your camp registration goes directly to support these organizations. We researched these groups for their passion, integrity, and accountability--you may read more about them by clicking on their respective links.

Offestting our carbon footprint
Big Wave Camp works with Trees, Water, & People to offset our carbon footprint from our bus transportation. The equivalent number of trees will be planted in Central America, also supporting the local village's sustainable lifestyles. A visit to the planting zone in Central America may be arranged as well. For further information, please visit their web site.

Implementing environment policies
In keeping with our philosophy, we ask everyone to work together to have the least environmental impact as possible. We recommend that food and drinks be packed in healthy, reusable containers to minimize waste. We also recommend biodegradable products for our children's own benefit. A healthy earth equals a healthy you! We thank you for your support and effort--let us continue to make a difference.
About the staffAbout the staff

Our staff are self-motivated leaders with real goals, and the example you would expect for your child.
Counselors must fulfill specific requirements and complete the counselor training program to be part of the staff.

Camp counselors are martial artists, students, and educators who have proven their commitment to the further education and development of children by volunteering and assisting in their respective communities.

Counselors are trained, experienced, and educated adults, thoroughly background checked, and certified in CPR and first aid for the safety of all campers. SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY.

Employment
We are accepting applications for the 2012 summer camp from all locations: Mississauga, Brampton, Etobicoke, Orangeville, Bolton, Caledon, Burlington, Oakville, Woodbridge, The Beach Toronto.

If you believe in exploring, creating, learning, discovering, and believe that you have something to offer the children at camp, then complete the Counselor Application Package and return to us by mail, fax, or email.

Please email all applications to: employment@bigwavecamp.ca
About the staff About the staff

Counselors in Training (CIT's) Teen/Youth Leadership Program

Participation in the CIT Program (summer camp or March Break camp) is a great opportunity for youth to learn the responsibilities and skills of a young leader, and also set the example for junior campers. A CIT assists each counselor as part of their leadership training, and will be assigned a senior counselor mentor to learn firsthand. They will also be assigned certain tasks by the director, depending on the itinerary. CITs have their own Counselor in Training Leader Program, but will also be given opportunities to spend time and do activities with campers their age. CIT Program graduates will be given priority when selecting future camp counselors.

As an investment in our youth leaders, Big Wave Camp will sponsor part of CITs' CPR certification. Big Wave Camp will also sponsor a Level 1 Canoeing Certification from the Ontario Regional Canoeing and Kayaking Association.

For teens interested in applying for a CIT position, please complete the CIT Application Package and submit to us by mail, fax, or email. You must be a registered camper to be a CIT. We are currently looking for CITs for the 2012march break and summer camps.

Summer Camp Programs and Activties

CANOEING PROGRAM - Please click here for the canoeing info sheet.

Why learn canoeing?
Aside from learning life-saving skills and water safety, certification could lead
to being an instructor and many job opportunities for the future.

SKATEBOARDING PROGRAM - Please click here for the skateboarding info sheet.

Why learn skateboarding?
In the words of our skateboarding guru, "The best part about it is the opportunity to overcome any fears,
and how the confidence gained from that carries through to other areas of life.
Children will be amazed at how much they can accomplish as long as they try!"

Big Wave Camp's Campership Program

Make a difference in a child's life by getting them to Big Wave Camp, where they will experience a summer like no other. Each year, many kids from low-income families lose the opportunity of experiencing a great camp. You can change that by donating to our GAKC program. All proceeds go to camper registration fees--transportation, park fees, insurances, and more. You may donate by cash or cheque (payable to Big Wave Camp), just mention GAKC.

GAKC sponsors a limited number of children each year. We sponsor kids anonymously and through social programs. Thank you for your generosity!
